History

Akragas was an Ancient greek city state on the southern coast of Sicily, renowned for its wealth, power, and monumental architecture in the classical Mediterranean world. Its remains are preserved in the archaeological area known as the Valle dei Templi, in the modern city of Agrigento in Italy. Founded around 580 BCE by Greek colonists from Gela, Akragas quickly grew into one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia, benefiting from fertile lands and strategic access to trade routes. By the 5th century BCE, it had become a cultural and economic center, famed for its grand temples and prosperity. The city was conquered and destroyed by the Carthaginians in 406 BCE, however it was rebuilt by Greeks in 338 BCE.
